Martin Smith exclusive interview

“I really only feel in the last 2 years that I’ve started to enjoy the singing thing.”

Kingdom of Comfort, the 14th Delirious album is as inventive as ever. Whatever you think of the band, you could never criticise their devotion to music, passion for pushing their gifting, and commitment to always excel.

Core sat down with Martin Smith at the record company offices on a Sunny afternoon the day before the new album arrived from the manufacturing plant.

One of the band’s most important ingredients - a melody you will remember - is still very prominent throughout the new record. As the principle songwriter, Martin Smith carries this burden.
“I remember being in a youth group situation with a guitar aged 15/16, wanting people to sing along to songs and knowing instantly if something was good or not. You can’t make people like something. We have probably all found that out. I want people somehow to get inside of the songs, love them and sing them. I think that’s the interesting thing - with Stu’s guitars and his shapes - I’ll try and make the melody sit on top of that. It’s quite an interesting balance.

With a steady stream of requests for performances from countries around the world, and a solid writing and recording schedule for the new album, it may have surprised a few people when Martin came up with an idea for yet another record. Having the opportunity of visiting so many countries, and most recently trips to India with Joyce Meyer, the band have been effected to use the position they are blessed with, to try a different way of making poverty history.
“We’ve travelled into some of the crazy parts of the world, seen some amazing stuff, and some horrific things. You can’t then just come home and get on with your life. So we made some promises to ourselves and to God to do all we can. My wife and I started this thing called ‘Compassion Art’.
We’ve had various people from all over the world come and stay with us at our home over the last five or six years. Some came to write with us and people became friends. So I just thought, I need to get all these people together. We just need to go away and write some songs, and see what comes out.
